Paraguay, a landlocked gem in South America, is bordered by Argentina to the south and southwest, Brazil to the east and northeast, and Bolivia to the northwest. The capital and largest city, Asunción, lies along the banks of the Paraguay River. Known for its stunning landscapes, Paraguay is home to subtropical forests, expansive wetlands, and savannas, making it a country rich in natural beauty.
A major exporter of soybeans, beef, and electricity—largely generated by the Itaipú Dam, one of the largest hydroelectric plants in the world.
Though we’ve never had the chance to visit Paraguay, there were several places on our list that we dreamed of exploring:
-
Gran Chaco: A vast wilderness that stretches across the country, the Gran Chaco is home to jaguars, remote wetlands, and Mennonite colonies, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural intrigue.
-
Salto Cristal: Nestled within the San Rafael Nature Reserve, this picturesque waterfall is a paradise for hikers and wildlife enthusiasts, providing the perfect setting for exploring Paraguay’s untamed nature.
-
Jesuit Missions: The UNESCO-listed sites like Trinidad del Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue are remarkable examples of colonial-era architecture and indigenous heritage, offering a window into the complex history of Paraguay’s early settlements.
-
Ruta Trans Chaco: A journey along this road trip would take travelers through the rugged Chaco region, where they can encounter vast landscapes, unique wildlife, and remote stretches of wilderness.
