Australia, the smallest continent in the world but one of the largest countries, extends west to east for over 4000km and north to south for over 3500km, excluding Tasmania. Northern Australia is closer to the capitals of Indonesia (Jakarta) and Papua New Guinea (Port Moresby) than to its own capital, Canberra. Arriving from Europe, most people are overwhelmed by the vast, uninhabited land. It is a country of stunning, rich landscapes filled with deep reds, yellows, greens, blues, and browns, with dead trees and red soil scattered across the land.

For those who venture off-road into the remote desert areas, the excitement of driving for days or even weeks without seeing another soul is an experience unlike any other. With thousands of bush tracks or off-road wheel tracks to choose from, it’s the ultimate off-road destination in the world, allowing travelers to cross the country from east to west or north to south without relying on the main roads.

However, be warned: to truly explore the extremes, you need a sturdy, reliable 4WD and communication tools in case you get into trouble. CB radios are great for vehicle-to-vehicle communication, and UHF is useful in the bush due to repeater stations. However, a satellite phone is highly recommended, or you can use an HF radio, which offers coverage across all of Australia, including the Royal Flying Doctor Service. For those who have an HF radio (which can be rented), joining VKS-737 is a smart move—it provides emergency and radio communication support for those who work, live, or travel in remote areas of Australia. Australia boasts unique flora and fauna, including the only egg-laying mammals on Earth, the platypus and echidna. Native animals such as kangaroos, dingoes, koalas, and kookaburras further define the country’s exceptional wildlife.
