Tourism in Iceland only increased since the year 2000, prior to this it only represented less than 2% to GDP. In the early 2000 it increased by around 4 and 6% per year and lately some years it exceeded 20% Today Iceland receives up to 5 million visitors a year mainly in Summer (June to September) Iceland is well known for its untouched nature and unique atmosphere. We visited Iceland in winter, and it was amazing and having no tourist around makes it easy to get in contact with the locals.
