The Middle East
This is not an area many overlanders explore; this area covers the Arabian Peninsula and we have made Iran part of the sub-continent section. The term Middle East was given to the Military command after the second world war. Some major religions in the area have their origin here, Islam, Judaism and Christianity. The area has a hot and arid climate but still has some major rivers such as the Tigris and Euphrates. Most countries in the Middle East have vast reserves of petroleum.
Having travelled the Sahara Desert and the Australian Desert we have seen some of the world’s greatest desert scenery here. However, you will also come across lush valleys, great cities and world class diving along the Red Sea Coast of Saudi Arabia and Jordan. (And across the Red Sea in Northern Sudan) Historic sites like Petra in Jordan, Damascus in Syria, Palmyra in Syria, Aleppo in Syria, and Baalbek in Lebanon just to name a few. The arid Gulf states are best known for the rich and famous where oil money and ultra-luxurious hotels face the coastline of Dubai, Qatar, and Oman. Perfect place to test your 4WD against the local Arabs in their dune bashing sessions. We were overwhelmed by the welcome and invites we received while travelling the Middle East. Arab Hospitality is one of the best in the world. Yes, we do have to dress appropriate and like any good traveller should is to familiarise yourself with local customs and etiquette. Sweet tea, the waterpipe and a game of backgammon is never far away.
