Northern Australia is closer to the capitals of Indonesia (Jakarta) and Papua New Guinea (Port Moresby) than to its own capital, Canberra. Arriving from Europe, most people are overwhelmed by the vast, uninhabited land. It is a country of stunning, rich landscapes filled with deep reds, yellows, greens, blues, and browns, with dead trees and red soil scattered across the land.

For those who venture off-road into the remote desert areas, the excitement of driving for days or even weeks without seeing another soul is an experience unlike any other. With thousands of bush tracks or off-road wheel tracks to choose from, it’s the ultimate off-road destination in the world, allowing travelers to cross the country from east to west or north to south without relying on the main roads.
Outback Travel Tips for International Overlanders
Australia’s outback, deserts, and even beaches are unlike those in Europe, Africa, or South America. Be aware:
-
First Aid: At least one person should be trained
-
Comms: Minimum UHF radio and sat phone. HF radio is ideal (rentable)
-
Safety: Always tell someone where you’re going, and confirm arrival
-
Rivers: Northern crossings may have crocodiles. Even freshwater crocs bite!
-
Beaches: Soft sand above high tide mark – drive on outgoing tide, and always turn toward the water, not uphill
-
Tyre pressures:
-
Start at 25 psi and drop in 5 psi increments as needed
-
In our LandCruiser, we’ve gone as low as 10 psi
-
Low speed is key
-
-
Terrain: Expect rutted tracks, bull dust, mud, sand, and water crossings—sometimes all in one day. Travel within your limits.
-
Don’t be overconfident: The Australian outback is unforgiving

However, be warned: to truly explore the extremes, you need a sturdy, reliable 4WD and communication tools in case you get into trouble. CB radios are great for vehicle-to-vehicle communication, and UHF is useful in the bush due to repeater stations. However, a satellite phone is highly recommended, or you can use an HF radio, which offers coverage across all of Australia, including the Royal Flying Doctor Service. For those who have an HF radio (which can be rented), joining VKS-737 is a smart move—it provides emergency and radio communication support for those who work, live, or travel in remote areas of Australia.
